FAQ’s

What do I need to book my first Medicare session?

You need 3 things before you can claim a Medicare rebate:

  • A valid Medicare card,
  • A referral from your GP,
  • A Mental Health Plan from your GP.
How many sessions do I get covered under Medicare?

You are entitled to 10 rebated sessions per calendar year, but your first referral will provide you access for just 6 rebated therapy sessions, you’ll then be required to have a check-in with your GP to get access to the other 4 sessions.

How do I access my Medicare rebates?

After each session we will process your Medicare claim for you and your rebate will be paid directly back into your bank account.

Do I need Medicare to access your services?

No, if you would rather see a therapist without Medicare you can simply book a session with any of our therapists now.

How can I get a Mental Health Plan and referral from my GP?

To obtain a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) and a referral from your General Practitioner (GP) in Australia, follow these steps:

  • Obtain a Referral to a Mental Health Professional: As part of the plan, your GP can refer you to a psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, or occupational therapist. This referral enables you to access Medicare rebates for mental health services.
  • Schedule an Appointment with Your GP: When booking, inform the clinic that the purpose is to discuss a Mental Health Treatment Plan. This ensures adequate time is allocated for your consultation.
  • Prepare for the Consultation: Reflect on your mental health concerns, symptoms, and any relevant personal circumstances. Bringing notes can help articulate your experiences during the discussion.
  • Discuss Your Mental Health with Your GP: During the appointment, openly share your feelings, symptoms, and any factors affecting your mental well-being. Your GP may ask questions to understand your situation better and might request you to complete a questionnaire to assess your mental health.
  • Develop the Mental Health Treatment Plan: If deemed appropriate, your GP will collaborate with you to create a Mental Health Treatment Plan. This plan outlines your mental health goals, treatment options, and available support services.
How do I select a psychologist for my referral?

Take a look at our therapists and decide which one is best suited to your style of counselling and needs.

During your GP appointment you can let them know that you have found a therapist on Talked and they can make your referral out to “psychologist”.

Even if there is a specific therapist listed on your referral you can still get Medicare rebates when you book with a different therapist. Your referral can be used with any of our therapists so find the right one for you. You may also switch therapists at any point without the need for a new referral.

If you already have a referral for a different psychologist or service you can still use that referral to get a rebate with any of our psychologists and you do not need to get a new referral.

Once you have your referral you can upload it to your Sharp Minds account after you’ve booked an appointment.

Do I still need to pay for the session?

Yes, you will need to pay for the entire session in full, then after the session when the rebate has been processed,  you’ll be paid the rebated amount directly back into your bank account.

If you are looking for bulk billing sessions please contact us to see if we can accomodate you.

Does my referral or Mental Health Care Plan expire?

In Australia, a Mental Health Care Plan and a referral do not have a strict expiration date but the number of sessions resets each calendar year, allowing for a new set of up to 10 sessions with rebates.

Can I claim Medicare Rebates for online counselling and therapy?
